Avoiding Backsplash and More: The Importance of Urinal Screens

Urinals

There is really only one thing more disenchanting than intense odor in a men’s restroom – and that’s urine stains. It doesn’t matter how clean the remainder of the facilities are or how many extras are provided for customers – you could even put a TV above each urinal with the game on but if you’ve got urine stains on the urinals, the wall around them and the floor beneath them, even your manliest of male customers are sure to squirm. So how do you combat backsplash in your urinals while not interfering with the draining process or harming the urinal? While you may have thought them to be a silly waste of time or money before, urinal screens can significantly reduce unsightly stains and drain blockage while eliminating odors and more.

Yes, it’s true – there are people out there who will try to smoke in your restrooms or who will have some trash in their pockets that they need to get rid of and they can’t possibly think of a better place to throw these items than into the open urinal in front of them. Urinal screens are designed to keep unwanted items such as cigarettes, paper and hair from clogging urinal drains and causing overflow or water damage. Just like in your home shower, a drain without some sort of screening agent clogs up on a more frequent basis and, if left untreated, can mean a huge chunk of change being shelled out to replace damaged pipes, drains, etc. Don’t forget the unpleasant odors that uric acid and drain blockage produce! Wouldn’t you rather stop these problems before they start?

And what about those unsightly urine stains on the inside and outside of the urinal as well as on the wall and floor are reminders of the bacteria lurking in your restrooms just waiting for the next customer… Not to mention the possibility of uric acid splashing back onto the clothes of the user. Yuck! Many urinal screens are also designed to prevent backsplash while in use. Men appreciate a clean restroom experience, too, so the opportunity to prevent backsplash on your guests as well as your facilities will give your customer satisfaction a boost.

Now that you’re looking to make your customer experience and restroom environment more pleasant, you may want to consider green alternatives for urinal screens that are better for the environment, containing less harmful chemicals. One such product is the EcoScreen Service by Workplace Essentials, which is made with recycled materials and has a VOC compliant scent for a safer solution to odor elimination. The EcoScreen is designed to protect clothing and surrounding surfaces from unsightly back splash while also protecting the urinal drain from debris. Each EcoScreen releases optimized bacteria which eliminates uric acid odors.

So wait, you’re telling me I can protect my drains, my facilities, my customers and the environment with just a simple urinal screen?  Yes! Workplace Essentials’ EcoScreen Service has pretty much thought of everything you and your male guests would need to have the best restroom experience while also protecting the environment. If you are not currently using urinal screens in your facilities, it may be time to evaluate your restrooms, customer experience and even your maintenance costs to see how much such a small investment can do. There’s nothing like a poor restroom experience to backsplash on your business.

With proper cleaning and frequency, urinals and the surrounding areas should not have any lingering odors or visible soiling. The use of urinal screens can be of great benefit, but pose little advantage if proper cleaning procedures are not maintained. The most important factor in a safe and presentable restroom is the use of the proper cleaning agents by properly trained personnel on a frequency appropriate for the facility.

Definitely true, Bill. Simply “masking” an odor is going to do more harm than good. However, reducing the amount of backsplash and keeping as much debris as possible out of the urinals does make for a more comfortable customer experience and an easier time for the cleaners. :)
